Home-Made Fenderwells

Tommi Hammarberg, the fabricatin'est guy I've come across yet, made these fenderwell headers for his '69 Valiant quite a while ago.
This was his first attempt at headers and he states that next time of course, they would be much nicer. Although the bends may not be perfect, They look to be a bit better fit than most you can buy.
Read on and see for yourself if "Aftermarkets" are worth the money.

Tommi mentioned that his main goals with the headers were to accomodate a 15" tire and the booster/master cylinder, which he didn't have at the time. The booster fits, but he says these are 14" tires. Still a pretty good fit.
The one-piece nose by the way, is also home-made.
Headers are made by starting at the exhaust flange and, using flexible tubing, arranging the tubes until they all work. Then, one piece at a time, they are replaced with real tubing, tacked together until the entire header is completed. Then the header is removed and fully welded. Yes, a tedious process, but not an incredibly hard one.
Alot of patience is required for this job.
The good thing about making your own headers vs. buying them is the fact that they fit your exact application....no dinging tubes, cutting or fixing is needed. Also....no $600 price tags.
Tommi's entire car is basically built from scratch, and he has a wealth of knowledge about what works and what doesn't. It's nice to know some people are still doing things themselves instead of just throwing money around.
We should all be so ambitous.
